Frames Through the Eyes
of the Environment
My choice of subject features Hong Kong from both city and nature perspectives.
Hong Kong is one of the world's biggest concrete jungles. A city of more than 7 million people
(worldpopulationreview.com, 2018) forms a land of densely placed skyscrapers and diverse architecture. However, unlike most urban centers, Hong Kong is a city that is surrounded by massive mountains and rich nature. The photos show how sometimes the details found in architecture and nature share similarities in shapes, forms, lines, repetition, rhythm and color. The series present tightly cropped geometric compositions of cityscapes, landscapes, buildings, trees, plants and rocks. The photos are taken in Kowloon and Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong. The work reveals that inspiration for architecture often comes from nature and that Hong Kong is much more than just a city made out of blocks of concrete. The beauty of Hong Kong comes from the combination of both natural and artificial elements. – Elisa Hangasjaervi
